AbstractForam preparados catalisadores mássicos, à base de óxidos Co, Mn e Al, para decomposição do óxido nitroso (N2O) para fins aeroespaciais a partir do método da coprecipitação. Este método consiste na coprecipitação de soluções de nitratos de Co, Mn e Al em solução de K2CO3, a 25°C, mantendo o pH em 10 pela adição de uma solução de KOH. Foram preparadas diversas razões molares: 4Co1Mn1Al, 1Co4Mn1Al, 1Co2Mn, 2Co1Mn, 1Mn2Al e 1Co2Al. Estes óxidos foram extrusados, calcinados a 900°C e caracterizados por Adsorção de Nitrogênio, Quimissorção de CO, Termogravimetria, Difratometria de Raios-X e por Espectroscopia de Fotoelétrons Excitados por Raios-X (XPS). Inicialmente foram efetuados testes catalíticos em um reator de leito fixo para avaliação da atividade dos catalisadores na temperatura de ignição da reação de decomposição do N2O. Em seguida foram executados testes em um propulsor de 2 N, empregando o catalisador com melhor desempenho nos testes catalíticos (4Co1Mn1Al), para verificar o performance do material, comparando com os valores teóricos. Foi, ainda, realizado um teste comparativo de desempenho com o catalisador 5% Rh2O3/Al2O3, tradicionalmente usado na decomposição do N2O. ABSTRACT: Cobalt, manganese and aluminum oxide-based bulk catalysts were prepared by the coprecipitation method for decomposition of nitrous oxide (N2O) for aerospace applications. Nitrates solutions of cobalt, manganese, and aluminum were coprecipitated in a K2CO3 solution at 25°C, with pH maintained at 10 by adding a KOH solution. Several oxides (4Co1Mn1Al, 1Co4Mn1Al, 1Co2Mn, 2Co1Mn, 1Mn2Al, 1Co2Al) were prepared, extruded and calcined at 900°C. These materials were characterized by N2 Adsorption, CO Chemisorption, Thermogravimetry, X-Ray Diffraction, and X-ray Excited Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The catalytic tests were first performed in a fixed bed reactor in order to evaluate the catalytic activity around the N2O decomposition temperature. Afterwards, tests on a 2 N thruster were carried out with the catalyst that has shown the best performance in the fixed bed reactor (4Co1Mn1Al) and the experimental results were compared to theoretical values. In addition, the performance of the bulk catalyst was compared to the conventional catalyst (5% Rh2O3/Al2O3) for N2O decomposition.
